Biophilia & Sustainability

With summer now in full swing it’s time to freshen up your interiors with the latest trends.

2019 is all about getting back to basics; Biophilia and Sustainability have become key themes as they share a deep connection throughout many design trends.

It’s time to think about where our products come from, how long they will last and their impact on the environment. Common materials found in both trends include organic resources such as wool, wood and stone.

But, what is Biophilia?

According to Oliver Heath Design “Biophilia (meaning love of nature) focuses on human’s innate attraction to nature and natural processes. It suggests that we all have a genetic connection to the natural world built up through hundreds of thousands of years of living in agrarian settings.” Therefore sustainable materials found in nature, help to connect us to the environment outside. As a machine and technology driven society, it is important for us to find a balance with nature, not just for our own health and well being but for the greater good of the environment.

Heimtextil, one of the biggest international trade fairs for home and contract textiles, also focused their attention towards these trends in their 2019 forecasts. Electric Trends said “Go Off-Grid shares the same fundamental movement towards natural, sustainable products; in search for a new closeness to nature, using materials that promise durability, sustainability and functionality.”

How to create a sustainable / biophilic home?

Starting with the colour palette – use a mix of earthy tones in reference to the natural theme of the trend. Mixing deeper shades of green with soft neutrals will help create a tranquil environment. This can even be achieved by using simple accessories or introducing indoor foliage to your interiors.

Pattern – Colours and patterns that are inspired by nature help to bring the outdoors in. For a modern take on pattern, think of natural geometric structures or large bold leafy designs. For a more traditional approach use simple soft floral patterns.
