Indoor Air Quality

Ulster participates in the Green Label Plus program of the Carpet and Rug Institute in North America ( This program tests carpet for the emission of harmful volatile organic compounds (VOC’s) and assures customers that carpet carrying the label is amongst the lowest emitting carpet available. This label is particularly important for projects seeking The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System™ certification. When carpet carrying this label is used along with approved pad and adhesives, the project qualifies for one LEED® point.

LEED® promotes a whole-building approach to sustainability by recognizing performance in the key areas of human and environmental health: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality. The percentage of rapidly renewable material used in Ulster’s products can also contribute towards a further LEED® point.

Wool is a natural fibre and in itself is proven to improve indoor air quality. Wool naturally absorbs humidity and airborne toxins producing a cleaner, more comfortable environment. Research backs up the ability of wool rich carpets to reduce airborne dust by trapping it in its top layer. It does not promote the growth of bacteria and is unsuited to dust mites which will also contribute to better air quality.

Green Label Plus certification and the natural qualities of wool combine to make an Ulster carpet the ideal choice to create a comfortable environment for work, rest and leisure.
